Enhancing Access Control Systems With Edge Controllers

Access control is important across many industries. Parking garages, shipping bays, and employee entrances in office buildings are all examples where access is commonly monitored and restricted. This can be done through central systems or even logical control at the edge thanks to modern IoT controllers.

Controllers enable automation and remote management of entry points. This ensures that only authorized individuals gain access to secure areas—and only within designated windows of time. Here are key features of ControlByWeb IoT controllers in access control.

  • Quality: All of our devices are manufactured using quality components and include a 5-year warranty—with many being in use with no problems for well over a decade.
  • Real-time monitoring: IoT control systems can monitor entry and exit activities in real time and see the current open/closed status of doors and gates. Timely notifications can allow for a prompt response to unauthorized access.
  • Automated and manual remote access control: Simple logical tasks such as opening and closing gates, doors, and barriers can be performed on the local level with an edge controller. Our browser-based interface allows users to manually open doors and gates remotely by clicking an open, close, or toggle button.
  • Peer-to-Peer Networking: ControlByWeb devices can link through P2P, allowing for shared I/O across multiple access points.
  • Intuitive integration: Our devices can be integrated with security and surveillance systems thanks to an open REST API and compatibility with protocols like MQTT, Modbus, and SNMP.
  • Secure by design: ControlByWeb modules don’t have a built-in OS or file system, making them less prone to vulnerabilities. Our devices regularly pass field tests from security-conscious customers and military organizations.
  • Easy to use: Devices are easy to set up thanks to a browser-based UI with drop-down menus to quickly create conditional and scheduled logic.
  • Connectivity: Hardware options allow for Ethernet, WiFi, or cellular networking to be used to share I/O data. This way integrators can bypass physical restrictions or use a connection that’s independent from existing networks.

Mechanics of an Access Control System

At its core, an access control system monitors and controls door locks or gate motors. A system authenticates individuals entering or exiting. Then an IoT controller unlocks a door or triggers a gate motor

Credentials are identifiers used by individuals to gain access. These can be digital identifiers, such as a PIN code or fingerprint, or a physical item like a keycard or fob. Readers are devices that scan the credentials. Readers can be installed at entry points—think of the pin pad outside of a gated community or the employee badge scanner outside an office building.

🏨 Enjoy your stay.
Keycards have been in use in hotels since the 1970s, originally punch cards with holes to correspond to a specific locking mechanism. Modern “smart” cards include microchips and a magnetic strip, NFC, or RFID technology.

When a credential is presented and verified, access control IoT devices are used to bridge the gap between the system and hardware. This could mean temporarily unlocking a door or activating a gate motor. These edge controllers can operate independently at the edge or as part of a centralized system.

Modern access control systems often integrate with other security systems, such as surveillance cameras and alarm systems, to provide a comprehensive security solution. They also offer features like real-time monitoring, remote management, and detailed access logs, enhancing both security and operational efficiency.

Take Gate Monitoring Further With ControlByWeb
Access control IoT devices like our X-410™ include a 1-Wire bus for temperature monitoring. This data can be used to control a relay attached to a heater, preventing a gate motor from freezing in colder weather.
