Enhancing Industrial Pressure Monitoring Through IoT

Industrial pressure monitoring is a critical task for ensuring efficient operations and safety across a wide range of processes and industries. The Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly improved how we monitor pressure and control components of the system, including hydraulic pumps and motors.

Intelligence at the Edge

The IoT is a network of physical devices with networking capability that enables them to collect and exchange data. ControlByWeb IoT modules can communicate with each other and across the internet, allowing for remote monitoring and access. They also go above and beyond a typical gateway by providing local logical control. Here are some of the key features that make ControlByWeb ideal for pressure monitoring applications:

  • Multiple input channels: ControlByWeb IoT controllers can accommodate multiple pressure sensors, allowing them to monitor pressure at multiple points.
  • Open communication: Our modules support MQTT, Modbus, open REST API, and SNMP, which makes it easy to integrate them with industrial SCADA systems and HMIs.
  • Intuitive IF-Then logic: ControlByWeb controllers include an embedded UI that can be accessed from any standard web browser. Here, users can create scheduled and conditional logic through an if-this-then-that flow.
  • Cloud connectivity: Controllers can be connected to the ControlByWeb Cloud, allowing pressure data to be accessed and analyzed remotely.
  • Data logging: ControlByWeb IoT controllers can log pressure data, which can be used for historical analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Security: ControlByWeb IoT controllers feature data encryption and authentication to help protect against unauthorized access. There’s also no OS or file system, making them inherently secure by design.
  • Reliable: Every device we manufacture is designed, built, and supported in-house. Every controller comes with an industry-best 5-year warranty.

How IoT is Used for Pressure Monitoring

IoT-based pressure monitoring systems typically consist of a network of pressure sensors, which are connected to IoT gateways or controllers. A gateway simply collects data from the sensors and shares it with a central SCADA. Controllers go a step further and provide logical control at the edge. For example, a ControlByWeb Ethernet module, such as the X-412™, can be programmed to turn a pump on or off depending on current pressure.

Pressure sensors can be used to measure a variety of different pressures, including:

  • Static pressure: The pressure of a fluid at rest.
  • Dynamic pressure: The pressure of a fluid in motion.
  • Differential pressure: The difference in pressure between two points.
  • Gauge pressure: The pressure relative to atmospheric pressure.
  • Absolute pressure: The pressure relative to a perfect vacuum.

IoT-based pressure monitoring systems can be used to monitor pressure in a wide range of industrial applications, such as manufacturing and environmental data logging.

The Benefits of IoT-Based Pressure Monitoring

Industrial pressure monitoring systems utilizing IoT offer many benefits over traditional pressure monitoring methods. For one, they’re typically both less expensive and complex, not requiring retrofitted wiring or costly hardware. There’s less need for human intervention, since relays can actively monitor and send timely notifications if pressure thresholds are exceeded, or if a system component becomes unresponsive. This is critical in reducing the wear and tear of pumps, seals, and other components when pressure fluctuates too heavily.

Even when things are running smoothly, there’s the peace of mind that you can access your IoT devices from any standard web browser. This allows users to view historical data and make manual changes as necessary without needing access to a SCADA or physical HMI.

ControlByWeb IoT controllers are a great fit for industrial pressure monitoring applications, offering useful features to improve the efficiency and reliability of your system. Our modular and P2P-capable devices make it easy to scale as I/O needs change and grow over time. Connect with our sales engineers to determine the best solution for your edge data needs.
