Firmware v3.12 is compatible with 400 Series devices currently running v3.0 or greater.

Firmware v3.12 brings remote field updates, which means you can apply future updates remotely using uploaded firmware files. Devices on v3.12 will now have a “Firmware” tab under the General Settings dropdown. Note that devices updated remotely will retain all settings and logic. After the update is complete, the device will run a quick test to ensure all settings and logic will work on the new firmware. If there’s an incompatibility, it will revert to the previous firmware.

Our controllers stand up to the security standards of many businesses and government organizations, and we’re always developing new safeguards to stay ahead of threats. The following has been implemented in firmware v3.12:

  • Advanced Networking. A new setting, Strict-Transport-Security Header, forces browsers to convert HTTP requests to HTTPS. Other settings include disabling iframes from loading and preventing files being pulled from any source other than the device.
  • Read-Only Access. Those who you have given access to your device’s Control Page can now be defined as Users and Guests. Users have access privilege on the Control Page to monitor sensors or control outputs. Guests have read-only access to monitor sensors. Passwords are optional for both Users and Guests.

Firmware v3.12 also unlocks MQTT compatibility! (Version 3.1.1.) The popular protocol is a lightweight publish/subscribe messaging transport standard. MQTT is open and easy to implement, making it an ideal protocol for IIoT applications. The MQTT section of firmware v3.12 can be found under the General Settings tab. You can learn more about the protocol on MQTT.org.

MQTT: 3.1.1 vs 5.0
MQTT 3.1.1 is the original version of the protocol, and 5.0 is an updated version that released in 2019. Our devices currently support 3.1.1. It’s simpler, sufficient in a majority of basic IoT scenarios, and—in the case of some legacy systems—the only compatible version.

Certain ControlByWeb edge controllers are WiFi-capable, and this new firmware includes a WiFi network settings tab for those devices. Note that the wireless module must be provisioned through Ethernet first so that it can be recognized by your WiFi access point.

A new feature allows ControlByWeb devices to use P2P (peer-to-peer) networking through the ControlByWeb Cloud. When adding a remote device, the option “Cloud” will appear under Communication Method. Note that this feature is only available if both devices have an active Cloud subscription and are running firmware v3.12 or higher.
